The French R

Accent-Specific Coaching

For American Speakers

Say ‘aha’ — feel that soft vibration at the back of your throat? Your English R lives at the front of your mouth. The French R lives at the back. Keep the ‘aha’ spot active while you say ‘rouge.’

For British Speakers

You barely pronounce R as it is — you’re already halfway there. Say ‘aha’ and notice the back of your throat. Now add voice to that position. That’s the French R.

For Australian / NZ Speakers

Your R is already softer than an American’s — good news. Say ‘aha’ and feel the back of your throat vibrate. The French R lives right there.

For Irish Speakers

Your R is actually already closer to European R sounds than any other English accent. For the French R, move that energy from the tip of your tongue to the back of your throat.

For Scottish Speakers

Your Scottish rolled or tapped R means you’re comfortable with strong R sounds — that’s useful muscle memory, but it’s in the wrong place. French R uses the back of the throat. Keep your tongue tip down and relaxed, and make a soft friction sound at the very back.

For Indian Speakers

Your retroflex R curls your tongue tip up and back — the French R is the opposite. Keep your tongue completely flat and relaxed, then make a soft gargling vibration at the very back of your throat. Think of clearing your throat gently.

For South African Speakers

Your South African R is softer than the American version — that helps. Say ‘aha’ and feel the back of your throat. The French R vibrates right there. Keep your tongue tip down.

For Nigerian / W. African Speakers

Your R may already be closer to a tap or trill. For the French R, move the action to the very back of your throat — say ‘aha’ and add voice to that spot. Keep your tongue completely relaxed.
